Maggie: Yesterday we headed to my sister's place for my niece's 3rd birthday party. She had thought of some fun activities for the different aged children at the party. A mini jumping castle for the older children (the girls did have a turn and weren't too frightened!) and a play pen full of colourful balloons.
Elisabeth: She is so intrigued by other children now, she watched older children intently and moves in on her cousins for smooches!

We're lying low today, I hurt my back picking Elisabeth up out of the bath before the party. On top of that the girls didn't allow us much sleep, so I am hoping for a nap soon!

Maggie: A belated 20/52 post. For once Maggie looks serious? Not for long.
Elisabeth: Looking slightly unsure. Check out Maggie in the background, they both got new shoes on Thursday and they are fascinated with them.

Hopefully I'll be back tomorrow with week 21!

Maggie: The girls loved a big cardboard box that Rob let them play in for some months. Unfortunately one wild and stormy night it flew off the verandah and got a bit soggy. He came home from work with a new box, and the girls are delighted. Maggie surprised us with starting to take a few steps this week.
Elisabeth: A very happy little girl with her new toy.

Happy Mother's Day. I meant to write another reflection on motherhood, but haven't found a moment so far. We have had a quiet day, enjoying each other's company after a trip up north to visit Rob's mum yesterday. We went out for a lovely lunch together.

Maggie: watching the rain pour down outside while they ate a lunch of cold sausages and warm mash potatoes. They are practising using spoons at the moment. Often most of the food is flicked over their shoulder or dropped into their bib before the spoon gets into their mouth but we cheer them all the same. This week she has started singing along to songs on the radio, her cute high-pitched voice makes me smile every time.
Elisabeth: after walking last weekend, she still prefers to crawl or be carried. She will walk but it isn't her preferred method of transport yet. They can both recognise a growing list of words and point to the object or part of their body. We made an appointment this week to see an eye surgeon about her blocked tear duct, as it has been badly infected for a few weeks, despite eye washing, breast milk, and antibiotic eye drops. It has been blocked since before she left the NICU. But we have been hoping it would unblock itself like Maggie's did. Of course as soon as the appointment was locked in, the eye has improved dramatically, but we will go along all the same.

Cabin fever has set in at the hut. I do keep meaning to take the girls outside to take their weekly portraits, but their cold and the dreary cold weather has prevented it. Last week I made a list of activities that make either Rob or myself happy; as varied as a neat and tidy garden, to visiting Mt Field National Park to see the autumn colours of Nothofagus gunnii. Even though it was raining yesterday we packed the pram with the rain cover, sleeping bags, polar fleece suits and beanies. We headed to the botanical gardens and took a walk around. The fresh air and getting out of the hut did do wonders for our state of mind.

Maggie: I compiled the first 16 weeks of photos into a collage and we were struck by the range of expressions Maggie uses! This week she has suddenly discovered talking; she doesn't make a lot of sense but she is definitely trying to tell us, her sister or the dogs something.
Elisabeth: We made the decision to move Elisabeth's cot into their room this week, despite this coinciding with a head cold, she has coped pretty well, and we think she is sleeping better without the disturbance of Maggie's crying. Last night she started walking around just before dinner, I suspect she could have done it for some time, but she wanted it to be perfect. She carefully steps along, rebalancing as she goes. Maggie cheered and laughed from the sidelines.

Although we had the week off, after the girls came down with the head cold on Wednesday (and then me on Thursday night), we've been laying low. They have so far coped quite well.  Head colds always scare me a little, I listen to their breathing at night for any sign of difficulty, but so far there has been none.
